Description
BUTUNDA
Arabica coffee is usually grown on mixed plantations with food crops for home consumption such as beans, peanuts and bananas. It is mainly grown under shade trees which ensure sustainable coffee production due to the leaves falling from trees to provide fertilizer for coffee plants. In Mbale, the growing season for Arabica coffee is between March and April, and the harvest is between August and November. Coffee trees are pruned from December to February before the planting season. Trees bloom during the dry season,
Robusta coffee is grown locally in the forested area of Kampala and the Lake Victoria Crescent. From 1999 to 2002, an effort was made to market this coffee as a premium brand to consumers, to emulate and extend the success that had grown in Central America.
